OVERVIEW

Students will be immersed in Cambodian culture and learn about the current environmental issues in the country as well as the history of ancient Cambodian environmental technology. Students will also explore Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Phnom Banan Temple, Eak Phnom Temple, and much more to gain an understanding of the water systems and ecosystems that exist in the region. For full cultural immersion, students will have the opportunity to interview locals about how they have been affected by global warming, in particular. 

ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

Program Length: 2 weeks
Program Contents: Combination of lectures, field trips, cultural immersion, and discussion

ITINERARY

Program Dates: May 24 - June 7

May 24: Arrive in Siem Reap
May 25: Travel from Siem Reap to Battambang, explore Battambang city, welcome dinner at ASEAN restaurant
May 26: Welcome from CEO and President of DIU, Lecture 1
May 27: Lecture 2
May 28: Travel from Battambang to Siem Reap
  • Inspection of ancient canal and reservoir system
  • Half-day tour to Angkor Wat Temple
  • Sunset visit to Bakheng Temple & Brae Roup Temple
May 29: Morning sunrise at Angkor Wat Temple 
  • Boat trip to Kbal Toul
May 30: Travel from Siem Reap back to Battambang
  • Discussion, summary and write-up of field trip
May 31: Excursion to Eak Phnom Temple, Ang Pheas reservoir, Phnom Banan Temple and Bamboo train
June 1: Day off; evening cultural tour at Phare Ponleu Selpak (optional) 
June 2: Lecture 3
June 3: Field trip to Rattanak Mondul in South West Battambang Province 
  • Discussion and write-up of field trip
June 4: Lecture 4, prepare interview questions to ask local people
June 5: Field trip to Koh Kralore: Effects of global warming on farming
  • Interview local farmers
June 6: Final discussion in class
  • Visit Phnom Sampov, killing caves, and bat caves
  • Farewell banquet at Rainbow House Restaurant
June 7: Travel from Battambang to Siem Reap and depart from Cambodia
