Cultural Immersion Program

OVERVIEW

Students will be immersed in Cambodian culture and learn about the current environmental issues in the country as well as the history of ancient Cambodian environmental technology. Students will also explore Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Phnom Banan Temple, Eak Phnom Temple, and much more to gain an understanding of the water systems and ecosystems that exist in the region. For full cultural immersion, students will have the opportunity to interview locals about how they have been affected by global warming, in particular. 

ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

Program Length: 2 weeks
Program Contents: Combination of lectures, field trips, cultural immersion, and discussion

ITINERARY

Program Dates: May 18 - June 1

Day 1: Depart from Cleveland
Day 2: Arrive in Siem Reap
Day 3: Travel from Siem Reap to Battambang
Day 4: Lecture 1
Day 5: Lecture 2
Day 6: Boat trip to Siem Reap
  • Explore the ecology of the swamp region and the Tonle Sap Lake
  • Sunset visit to Bakheng Temple
Day 7: Full day tour to Angkor Wat Temple and other temples
  • Western Baray reservoir
Day 8: Morning sunrise at Angkor Wat
  • Travel from Siem Reap back to Battambang
  • Discussion and write-up of field trip
Day 9: Excursion to Phnom Banan Temple and Bamboo train
  • Excursion to Eak Phnom Temple and canal system
Day 10: Day off 
Day 11: Lecture 3
Day 12: Field trip to Rattanak Mondul in South West Battambang Province (lecture and discussion)
  • Discussion and write-up of field trip
Day 13: Lecture 4
Day 14: Field trip to Koh Kralore: Effects of global warming on farming
  • Interview local farmers
  • Phnom Sampeau, killing caves, and bat caves
  • Farewell Banquet
Day 15: Travel from Battambang to Siem Reap and depart from Cambodia
