OVERVIEW 


Course Name and CRN: THE ABC'S OF SCOTLAND: ANATOMY, BODY-SNATCHING, AND CEMETERIES

Course Description:  
The course focuses on anatomical collections and the history of medical education in Scotland. This excursion will include several cemetery tours, including two world-famous cemeteries known for their beautiful architecture and sculptures. Each will show various efforts designers took to frustrate and deter the body snatchers. Some evenings will include ghost walks and vault tours!

TENTATIVE ITINERARY

When:  March 21- March 29, 2019
1. Students will gain an historical perspective of anatomical and medical studies in 19th century Scotland, and view anatomical collections used for teaching.
2. Students will study the history of illicit removal of corpses from graves and morgues for sale to medical schools (body snatching) during the 18th and 19th centuries, in the British Isles.
3. Students will gain an appreciation for Scottish 19th century architecture and sculpture, as seen in cemeteries and city buildings (including Glasgow Central railway station, an iconic Victorian building)
4. Students will gain an overview of the history (and natural history) of Scotland, as a context for the above stated Objectives. This includes ghost walks, vault tours, etc. where guides will relate local legends from the past about death and dying, the Black Plague, and corpses.

If vaccinations or medicines are needed according to the CDC, you can make arrangements with the DeWeese Health Center as soon as possible for immunization appointments.  Appointment openings are limited and they may have to order your vaccine, which takes time.  Plan accordingly.

Participants will be staying at St. Christopher’s Hostel from 3/21-3/25 and at Euro Hostel Glasgow from 3/26-3/28.

Payment Instructions: Payments are to be made online through the program website. You may start your payments immediately upon acceptance on this program. There are no exceptions for late payments and failure to make a payment by the deadline will result in forfeiting your seat on the program.
