INTRODUCTION

Costa Rica has much to offer students in the form of breathtaking landscapes, a rich variety of plants and animals, and vibrant culture. The University of Costa Rica is located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, very close to the capital city of San José. San José is a vibrant urban center surrounded by large forested mountain ranges, some of which include active volcanoes and coffee plantations. Classes are offered in the following six academic areas: Liberal Arts, Basic Sciences, Social Sciences, Food and Agricultural Sciences, Health and Engineering. The student population averages 45,000 students, distributed between the Universidad de Costa Rica's main campus and its regional campuses.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The regular academic year is divided into two semesters.

  • Spring semester: late February - early July
  • Fall semester: early August - early December
  • These dates are tentative. Always consult the host university's academic calendar and your Education Abroad Advisor for the official dates before finalizing travel arrangements.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • This program is open to students of all majors, regardless of class standing.
  • The minimum GPA requirement for this program is a 3.2. 
  • Students must have taken classes at Kent State University for at least one semester before applying, i.e. students must have a Kent State GPA.
  • Students must have proficiency in written and oral Spanish. Students have to complete the Spanish Competency Certificate.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND AMENITIES

The Rodrigo Facio Campus has three multipurpose gyms, a swimming area with two pools, and a stadium. It also has areas to practice tennis, beach volleyball, soccer, basketball, and outdoor athletics. On the Rodrigo Facio Campus, there are a total of 8 libraries available for UCR students as well as international students.

Host-family accommodations are available for international students. The UCR provides students the possibility to apply to live with a host family during the time they will be studying. Due to a limited amount of host families, applicants will be placed first come, first served. Students interested in living with a host family must fill out a form.

Students can opt for alternative housing through their own means. The UCR does not provide assistance in finding alternative housing for exchange students.

COSTS & TUITION

  • Students pay Kent State University tuition (Ohio Resident or Non-Resident) for 12 credit hours.
  • Housing and living costs will vary depending on the options students choose.
